Build your executive resume

Works right here, without an account. Nothing you paste is stored.

Free, no account, nothing stored.

Executive resumes fail in a distinctive way. They are usually well written, well formatted and entirely about responsibility rather than consequence. Page after page describes what the person oversaw, and almost nothing describes what changed because they were there.

Search consultants and boards read for a specific set of signals, and they read fast. Everything below is about making those signals findable in the first ninety seconds.

The signals that get read first

Put these in a short scope line directly under each role title, before the bullets. A reader should be able to establish your level from the first two lines of each entry without reading prose.

  • P&L ownership — revenue and cost base you were accountable for, in currency
  • Headcount — total organisation size and how many levels reported to you
  • Scope — geographies, business units, functions, product lines
  • Transformation outcomes — turnarounds, restructures, integrations, market entries, exits
  • Board and investor exposure — reporting lines, board seats, investor relations, audit and remuneration committees
  • Governance — regulatory, risk and compliance accountability where relevant

Executive summary, not a professional summary

Five to six lines at the top of page one. What kind of executive you are, the scale you operate at, the two or three situations you are known for handling, and what you are seeking. This is the only section guaranteed to be read in full.

Follow it with three or four career highlights as standalone bullets — the largest, most legible results of your career, stripped of context. That block is what a search consultant quotes when they present you.

Writing about scope without writing about duties

Responsibility framingConsequence framing
Responsible for the EMEA businessLed EMEA (£140M revenue, 380 staff, 9 markets) through a restructure that returned the region to profitability in 14 months
Oversaw the finance functionRebuilt finance from 6 to 22 people ahead of an IPO, delivering the first audited group accounts and a clean opinion
Managed the digital transformation programmeDelivered a £30M transformation across 4 business units, retiring 11 legacy systems and reducing run cost by 26%
Reported to the CEOReported to the CEO and presented quarterly to a 7-member board including two PE investor directors

Format and length

Two pages. Executives who insist on four are usually including operational detail that stopped being relevant three roles ago.

Use a serif, generously spaced layout — Regent or Hallmark. These resumes are frequently printed, read on paper and passed around a room, which is a different constraint from a screen-only document.

Keep it single column. Executive search firms run their own databases and parse submissions, and a scrambled two-column resume is as damaging here as anywhere else.

What to leave off

  • Roles from more than 20 years ago, beyond a one-line early-career summary
  • Operational detail from roles below director level
  • Skills sections listing generic competencies — leadership, strategy, communication
  • Every board of a small association you have ever sat on; include the ones that carry weight
  • Photographs, unless you are applying in a market where they are expected

Frequently asked questions

How long should an executive resume be?
Two pages. Beyond that you are including operational detail that no longer signals your level. A board pack is a different document and can be longer.
Should an executive resume include metrics?
It should be built on them. P&L, headcount, growth, cost reduction, integration value, market share. At this level a resume without numbers reads as one that cannot produce them.
Do executive resumes go through an ATS?
Yes — search firms parse submissions into their own candidate databases, and corporate boards use the same HR systems as everyone else. Keep it single column.
How do I show board experience?
A dedicated Board and Advisory section listing organisation, role, committee membership and dates. Include non-executive and advisory positions; both are read as governance signals.
Should I include a photo on an executive resume?
Not in the UK, US, Canada or Australia. In parts of continental Europe, the Middle East and Asia it is conventional. Follow the market you are applying into.
How do I address being let go in a restructure?
Not on the resume — dates that end are simply dates that end, and at executive level this is unremarkable. Prepare a clear, unemotional two-sentence explanation for the conversation.
